Press Release – API-AGRO, OpenDataSoft
API-AGRO chooses OpenDataSoft to manage and monetize its APIs
Paris, France – June 9, 2015 – API-AGRO and OpenDataSoft have partnered up to create a data and services platform around the topics of agronomics and agriculture.
API-AGRO is a consortium of 12 partners – Agricultural Technical Institutes such as ACTA or ARVALIS and Research and Development Organizations such as INRA – all working together to define needs in regard to the description of cultivation, farming and production systems.
Their initiative aims to co-build a platform bringing together and optimizing data and services derived from agricultural repositories. To achieve this project, API-AGRO turned to OpenDataSoft, the leading platform that enhances the value of structured data through visualizations and APIs.
An interoperability platform built to expose data via APIs
The API-AGRO platform will enable the consortium partners to expose their data and APIs in a simple and secure way on a single platform. The purpose of the project: share data and services within the consortium but also make them available to the entire agricultural ecosystem.
Agricultural references searchable on the platform will include repositories (product lists with categories of pests, diseases, varieties, etc.), expertise (varieties sensitivity, nutritional information, etc.), indicators (environmental pressure, agro-ecological indicators, water balance, etc.), and also support features (the possibility to convert repositories for instance).
An online payment module will also be implemented, enabling the monetization of services on a dedicated marketplace. The project is scheduled for deployment in September 2015.
Simplicity and flexibility
Théo-Paul Haezebrouck, API-AGRO project manager, explained why OpenDataSoft was the best partner to collaborate with:
“We chose the French start-up OpenDataSoft over large API management platform editors as the turnkey solution provided by OpenDataSoft was the most appropriate for non-technical users, enabling each API-AGRO member to quickly highlight their APIs and data sets. Data visualization features also drew our attention. We couldn’t find a tool as interesting and original to maximise the value of data in other competitors’ proposals.”
New features developed in the context of this project
Jean-Marc Lazard, CEO of OpenDataSoft, also declared:
“Working on the API-AGRO project gave us the opportunity to develop two new flagship features: displaying existing APIs together with data and services monetization.”
API-AGRO is a CASDAR project, laureate of the 2013 call for projects launched by the The French Ministry of Agriculture, Agrifood, and Forestry. This two-year lasting project seeks to develop a unique interoperability platform within the agriculture ecosystem, enabling its different actors to expose data and APIs.
